What Is A High Risk Merchant And How Do You Prevent Chargeback?

High risk merchants refer to high-risk businesses susceptible to chargeback. A chargeback occurs when a consumer disputes a charge, this could be because they are not satisfied with your product or service, or they claim to have been defrauded. A chargeback nullifies a card transaction and withdraws funds that were initially paid to the business to be returned to the consumer.

Chargeback is different from a refund. A refund is when a business willingly returns a consumer's money due to an error or complaint. In the case of a chargeback, the consumer approaches the bank with the complaint, and if the bank finds the complaint to be valid, it forcefully withdraws the said amount from the merchant's account to be deposited in that of the consumer.

The main purpose behind the creation of chargeback is customer satisfaction. The risk of having to return money back to customers and pay chargeback fees compels businesses to provide excellent service and prevents them from selling products that are not the exact ones displayed on their online store.

There are different types of chargeback, and not all of them are legal. Some customers commit criminal or friendly frauds against the merchant. Criminal fraud is where a sensitive information is stolen or credit card is hacked and used to purchase merchandise. A friendly fraud is where a customer claims he did not get a merchandise and approaches the bank for a refund when actually he got the product.

3) Be observant:

Be observant of any suspicious and unusual activity such as mismatched email and password, mismatched billing and shipping address or incorrect credit card details. All of these should raise a red flag. If you notice any unusual activity, notify the customer immediately. Increasing check out security can help reduce the incidence of fraud.

4) Provide excellent customer service:

Excellent customer service is one of the hallmarks of a good business. Some businesses have excelled above their competitors solely by delivering better customer service.
